Men’s and women’s cross country teams kicked off their Blackburn home meet on Oct.12. Blackburn has been Webster’s cross country home meet for 20 plus years.

Women’s coach, Leslie Crais, led the team to state last year. Blackburn is one of her favorite courses we run all year. She said, “I think it’s a good meet. It’s one of our hillier courses so the girls always kinda stress about it, but I really think it really is a nice course.”

Crais added the numbers for schools attending is higher this year. Usually about 15-17 schools attend, but this year it’s in the 25-26s.

Crais said, “I almost feel like we have a disadvantage cause sometimes I feel like the girls feel more pressure. One, they think the course is hilly. Two, they worry about performing because they know it’s their home meet.”

Senior Jane Lawless said, “It’s our home course, so we are able to practice on it and know how to run the race. We have to go up the same hill three times, so we practice on that hill once or twice a week.”

One of the things Lawless loves most about the Blackburn meet is the senior activities.

Lawless said, “Normally Blackburn meet is our senior night! So I love getting to celebrate the seniors and having fun activities to do there like the bake sale and face painting.”

Senior Ellie Miller said, “My favorite park about Blackburn is definitely all the people that come and support, and just all the family and friends are able to come because it’s not far away like most other courses are.”
