Editor-in-chief is sick and tired of writing headlines

It feels impossible to summarize my time on the Echo in half a page. I have rewritten this story almost three times, but these three years cannot begin to fit in 400 words.

The experiences I have gained on the Echo, as a sophomore in journalism, a junior as junior editor and this year, as editor-in-chief, are something I will take with me next year as I continue to study journalism at Mizzou and through the rest of my life.

Alongside what I have learned about journalistic writing, the Echo has taught me a number of other skills: leadership, communication, confidence, community involvement and time management.

Beyond that, the Echo has also brought me some of my closest friends. I met Sam Klein, who is now our multi-talented print and podcast editor, on our first day of journalism.

The first story I ever wrote was about Sam, as I so vividly remember Donald Johnson assigned us to write profiles about one another. In a perfect full circle, the last story I’ll ever write for the Echo will be about Sam.

I have a million “thank you’s” to issue, and let the first one be to Mr. Johnson, the hardest working and most patient advisor that we could ever ask for. Thank you for your endless words of encouragement and much-needed editing skills, and for bearing with me when I forget to update the poll.

To everyone who has been on the Echo these past three years, I cannot thank you enough for everything. Especially to those on this year’s staff, thank you for all your hard work. I am so proud of every one of you and what you have accomplished.

Thank you to everyone who has ever let me interview them, especially Macey Fischer, who should probably be on staff with the number of times she has been interviewed.

To Elaine Hartmann, thank you for printing every issue of the Echo, but especially this exorbitantly long issue.
Thank you to Tania Perez-Landerio for helping us out with your astounding art– we wouldn’t have half-decent layout without you.

Finally, thank you to my family and friends, whether or not you really read the Echo (looking at you, Russell).

This is already over the word limit, but I don’t know how to end this. The Echo means so much to me, and it feels surreal my time with it is ending. That said, good luck to next year’s staff– I can’t wait to see all of the things you accomplish and don’t forget to send me an Echo!
