As print editor and podcast editor of the Echo, senior Sam Klein has won 16 awards for her podcasting and her writing, including two consecutive All-Missouri Awards for the “Voices of Webster” podcast.
As print editor, Klein is responsible for the layout of the Echo and design choices. As podcast editor, Klein is responsible for the “Voices of Webster Podcast,” a once-monthly feature podcast.
“It puts me out of my comfort zone a lot, by making me learn how to talk to people better, and it made me get a lot more comfortable with a space in the high school pretty quickly,” Klein said.
Klein joined the Echo her junior year after taking journalism as a sophomore, saying she “wanted to explore a new kind of writing and find a way to use my creativity and passion for writing in a more practical way.”
Writing has always been a passion of Klein’s.
“I spend a lot of time writing. I like to write anything from poetry to fiction, or sometimes I get passionate about a topic and I write a podcast script that I’ll never actually use for whatever reason… I’m always in my google docs,” Klein said.
In addition to her work on the Echo, Klein is also a member of the women’s golf team, president of the Branch Literary Magazine, a member of National Honor Society and competed in DECA, where she qualified for internationals this year.
Klein plans to attend the University of Missouri to study journalism, most likely on the strategic communications track.
“I’ve always known I wanted to do something with writing, and for a while I thought publications would be the move, or being an author, but I realized that I really wanted to be a journalist and help make a difference,” Klein said.
