Webster Groves Men’s hockey team hosted Priory at Webster Groves Recreation Center Saturday Jan. 6, at 8:45 p.m. Priory scored one in the first period and sealed the win 1-0.
Webster comes into the game with a record of 9-7. Priory being the number one team in its conference with only one loss.
Louis Shumate, senior defensemen and assistant captain, said before the game, “Our team has progressed a lot over the year. We had kind of a slow start and took a lot of penalties, but we really work as a team now. We just need to come out not as slow in some of the games. As for Priory they’re a tough competitor ranked number one in our conference.”
The first period Priory had control of the puck most the time. Their efforts paid off when they scored with 4:51 left in the first period.
In the second period, players started getting very heated up. Two fights started up but the referee did his job at keeping the game clean. Senior Captain Charlie Scheipeter and other players on Webster started having several shots in the second and third period but just couldn’t put it behind Prioriy’s goalie.
Coming into the third period, Webster started getting more possession of the puck and almost looked as so it would come back and get that tying goal. However Webster just couldn’t score, in result of Priory’s top notch defense and it’s goalie.
After the game Shumate said, “I thought we played one of our best games this season. I think everyone realizes that, so not so much to come back from but keep it going. They will be in the above us.”
