Senior Emmett Shank has been swimming since he was six years old, due in part to the fact that his dad swam in college.

Shank started as a part of the Webster Waves and KWBY swim teams. Since then, he has switched over to Parkway Swim Club.

According to the team’s website, “Each [Parkway] swimmer is an important team member and will be provided with the opportunity to develop self-confidence, discipline and time management skills that will be used for the rest of their lives.”

Shank chose Parkway because he knew it would set him up for success. Hoping to get an Olympic Trial Cut in 2028, Shank will use the principles of patience and discipline that he learned from Parkway to help him achieve it.

However, Shank has not just been supported by Parkway. His family has also been part of his support system.

“My parents have always gifted me a platform that has built me up, and my older brother Calum [always] pushes me to be better than him,” Shank said on his family’s influence.

Shank’s friends have also been an important factor in his success, especially his club teammate Colin Schaffer. “[Colin] has always been better than me up until recently. He’s a huge role model for me and now I compete with him daily,” Shank said.

For Shank’s high school team, Clark Montgomery has made the biggest impact on him. “Him and I are really great friends, but in the water, he is a rival of mine, and I don’t want him to beat me head-on-head, so I have to outwork him to stay faster,” Shank added.

Shank plans to continue swimming at the University of Indianapolis, a Division II university according to its website.

“They are the best D II swim school, and they offered me a full-tuition scholarship” Shank said on his choice.

In addition to swimming, he plans to double major in political science and business.
