DECA will host the Webster Power Puff at the newly renovated Moss Field on Sunday, Oct. 20, at noon to raise money for its field trip to New York.
Powder puff is a regular game of flag football, but the women take the field while the men stay on the sidelines as coaches and cheerleaders. The concept has been around for nearly 100 years.
Senior Adrianna Williams, Purple Team, said, “Oh my team is stacked; we’re gonna win.”
Senior Dayton Stahl, Pink Team, said her team looks “Amazing, it’s looking real good. I’ve heard things about Purple, and Pink looking real good.”
Seniors on the football team will coach the players. Zaine Meyer, Peter Dodson and Sean Keegan will coach the Purple Team, while David Trampe, Will Jenkel and Patrick Brown will coach the Pink Team.
“For me, the hardest part has been teaching (the women) the mechanics of the game, like throwing and catching the ball,” Dodson said about the challenges of coaching football.
“The hardest part has been getting the girls to understand what to do, especially because some of the girls have never watched or played football (before),” Meyer added.
Brown said, “The hardest part for me is getting them to focus on their individual position. Like, they see what they’re doing, but not how it relates to the big picture.”
Brown added, “The girls are showing a lot of enthusiasm, and you can see it in their eyes.”
The two teams will each have a special guest coach for the day of the game. Assistant principal Dwight Kirksey will coach with the Pink Team. Former Webster football coach Cliff Ice will coach the Purple Team. Ice was most notably the head coach for the 2009 state champions, the most recent team to do so.
“When you think of the (Webster) football program, you think of Ice,” Dodson said about getting to work with Ice.
Meyer added working with Ice is “a blessing.”
“A lot of what we’re teaching is what has already been taught to us by our coaches, so they [the women] definitely have a deeper understanding [football],” Brown said.
