Next year, senior Owen Barrs will attend the University of Southern California to study business administration with a focus in international economics.
Barrs said his interest in this field was sparked by a desire to live internationally.
“I really want to work in a global field. A dream job for me is working for a Formula 1 team… They get to travel around the world to 20 different countries throughout the year, and I feel like that would be a really cool experience,” Barrs said.
Throughout high school, Barrs has been involved with a variety of organizations, including Asian Pacific Islander Desi American club (APIDA) and the string ensemble orchestra.
As president of APIDA, Barrs is responsible for organizing events and leading the group, bringing in guest speakers and members of the surrounding community for school-wide and organizational events.
This year, Barrs is helping the club organize a professional development presentation to educate district leaders about the experiences of Asian American students.
Barrs’ explained he has also been a member of the string ensemble since his sophomore year, but this year, he is second chair viola.
“This comes with a leadership role if there are duets in the first stand, but more specifically during sectional practice time. I work out certain fingerings for parts and offer input on stylistic things,” Barrs said.
Barrs has also worked as a host at Olive and Oak and O+O Pizza for the past three years, anywhere from 15-to-20 hours a week.
In September, Barrs was nominated for Senior of the Month by social studies teacher Betty Roberts.
