Players from Varsity and JV Skatesmen teams were part of a round of friendly matches against various levels of the Blues Special hockey teams on Saturday, Feb. 17.

This year, the Blues Special Hockey program celebrates the 30th anniversary of its existence. The team’s mission is, “… is to give people with intellectual disabilities the chance to play the sport of ice hockey in an environment that is adapted to the level of ability which the athletes are able to participate.”

It was clear that Blues Special Hockey was executing its mission statement to perfection. During the friendly match on Saturday. The Skatesmen played to the level of their opponents the whole time, making the game a match where every player on the ice had a chance to thrive. Every time the Skatesmen scored, the Special Hockey team was right there to convert and tie up the game.

A player on the Blues Special Hockey Team’s mom said, “It makes me so happy to see my son have this opportunity to enjoy himself doing something he loves. He’s been playing hockey since he was nine and this is one of his favorite games he gets to play.”

Senior Conlan Doty said, “It was a lot of fun getting, ya know, to play again with my teammates one last time and to, ya know, help some players who don’t get to experience the game a whole lot to have a fun experience. I do wish there were more players on both teams. Ya know, get some real lines going and to make it more like a real game. I just think that would add to the overall experience.”
