Skylar Garcia, first-year teacher, teaches biology and microbiology.
Last year Garcia was a student teacher at Webster with Joseph Boeckman, another biology teacher.
Garcia describes her teaching philosophy as “trial by fire,” and explains that this way of teaching is more organic.
“I will introduce a lab before my students even know what they are looking at… I say, ‘What is this?’ They say, ‘I have no idea!’ I’m like, ‘That’s the point!’” Garcia said.
Garcia’s students will gain a better understand by doing, asking questions, then learning how they can improve, she said.
This year Garcia hopes to be like one of her high school teachers, who showed her that there was a different way of teaching than constant lectures and worksheets. She hopes her way of teaching will change the negative stereotypes of high school being similar to a boring lecture hall.
