Senior Cami Smith plans to attend Millikin University, where she will major in vocal music education.
Millikin University is located in Decatur, IL, according to its website. The website added, “Since its founding more than 110 years ago, Millikin University has operated under the philosophy of providing an education that combines theory with practice.”
Smith chose to major in vocal music education for multiple reasons. “I knew I wanted to do something with music for my career, and while I do like teaching and singing with others, becoming a teacher was also the most certain and stable way for me to do music and not end up broke or unemployed,” Smith said.
In addition to her major, Smith plans to get involved in other on-campus organizations surrounding music. “They [Millikin] have many great choirs, jazz groups and a cappella groups,” Smith said.
It is no surprise Smith wants to pursue music in college, considering that one of her favorite classes in high school was Chamber Choir, and she has taken voice lessons for seven years. “I have [also] danced ballet, jazz, and tap,” Smith said.
Jaylen Davis, Smith’s choir teacher, is excited to see what Smith will accomplish in the future.
“Her talent is superior and proves to be through annual state solo competitions and her near future career path as she has committed to studying Vocal Music Education at Millikin University, one of the top music education programs in the Midwest! She truly takes the craft of singing seriously through private lessons, professional musical theater productions, solo community performances and much more through the choral department,” Davis said via email.
