Men’s basketball earned third place in the three-day Bill Hanson Memorial Tournament in Pittsburg, KS, on Jan. 23-25. Its final game was a 65-32 victory over Willard High School.

Players prepared for the tournament by having daily practices and playing in an away game against McClure, on Jan. 16.

Drew Hedenberg, a sophomore who swings up from JV to Varsity, participated in the tournament for the first time this year.

Hedenberg said, “I’m excited. I think it’ll be fun, good competition. I think all year and all throughout the off-season we’ve been practicing for moments like this.”

Sophomore Peter Oliver said, “I’m excited. I think we’ve prepared well and have good team chemistry. Yeah, I’m excited. We’re gonna play hard.”

Sophomore Scottie Adkinson said, “Last year it was fun, you know. We lost the one game before going to the finals, but this year I feel like we could get the job done. We’ve prepared really good. We push each other in practice really hard, everyday.”

Varsity head coach Justin Mathes said, “ It’s a really good tournament, some of the best teams in the Midwest; really good teams from Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, so all three games we’re gonna be tested and have to play well to be successful.”

“I think we’re preparing well right now. We’ve won five in a row and just trying to get better every day, and like I said every team is a quality opponent. With trying to prepare for some different for some defensive looks that you might not see everyday, they’re not gonna be basic man-to-man or basic two-three zone, so just one practice at a time try to get better and try to win that first round,” Mathes added.
