Basketball game to honor school history

Douglass Night, an annual basketball game in honor of Douglass High School, an all African American high school which existed from 1925 to 1956, will be held Friday, Feb. 16 at 7:15 p.m. in Roberts Gym.

Starting in 2007, the tradition now involves the women’s and men’s basketball players from WGHS wearing purple and gold uniforms, which were the school colors of Douglass High School. A speech is given before the game and the night is dedicated in honor of Douglass High School. This year the double header game will take place on Friday, Feb. 16, in Roberts gym.

The men’s team will play against Marquette High School, and the women’s team will play Pattonville High School.

Athletics director Jerry Collins said, “It’s a special part of our community. The school is a very significant part of our African American history, and I just think it’s good for us to recognize and celebrate it.”
