COVID numbers rise after winter break

At school, there has been a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases. With the Omicron variant spreading throughout winter break, and being more contagious, the number of teachers and students out has risen by 124 new total cases from coming back from winter break.

According to the COVID-19 Dashboard on the School District website, there have been 152 positive cases between Aug. 23, (first day of school) and Jan. 9, at the high school. Seventy-seven out of those 152 positive cases occurred after coming back from winter break.

The school district website also recommends a Daily Wellness Check for families to ensure it is safe for students to attend school, including taking temperatures and checking for symptoms.

According to the recent update to the COVID-19 Dashboard on the School District website, there have been 199 positive cases between Aug. 23, and Jan 16, at the high school. Since last week, there has been an increase of 47 new positive cases.

School nurse Rachel Huertas said via email, ¨Interim lunch was another layer of our mitigation strategies and the more layers the better” about how adding the interim lunch affected COVID cases.

Huertas also said via email, ¨The Omicron surge is responsible for the highest rate of new COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, and that’s certainly true for WGSD as well¨ about how the cases compared with last year.
