Eagle award winner to major in broadcast journalism

Senior Jessica Peterson, Eagle Award winner, was involved in sports, theater, social justice, THRIVE business incubator and academics at Webster.

“I was involved in the softball program, Nation Honor Society, the drama department, and Speak Up,” Peterson said. 

“The most memorable experience I had in high school was hitting a home run my junior year during the conference championship game,” Peterson said.

Peterson’s involvement helped her find her passions.

“These experiences helped me be open to try new things and step outside my comfort zone every once in a while,” Peterson said.

“The high school helped me realize my strengths and weakness and helped guided me to the career path that I chose for myself,” Peterson said.

Peterson said her favorite class was advanced drama, and her favorite teacher was Todd Schafer.

Receiving the Eagle Award came as a surprise to Peterson.

“I have received other awards throughout my four years of high school, but they were mainly sports-related. Receiving such a prestigious award like this one really made me feel like the small things mattered, and that was such a great feeling to have,” Peterson said.

“So I didn’t expect to be honored in that way. It was an amazing surprise to have, especially since my senior year was cut short. It felt great to be recognized in that way. I feel like I’ve gotten a lot of support throughout my four years of high school, and that was a nice ending for such a unique year like this one,” Peterson said.

Peterson plans to major in broadcast journalism at the University of Missouri this fall.
