Winter sports athletes will be recognized at an assembly in Roberts Gym during seventh period on Friday, Jan. 20.
Sports assemblies are held at WGHS multiple times a year to celebrate sports teams across the school, ranging from the football team to Robotics, as well as sports outside the school, such as the ice hockey team. Since it is the winter assembly, it will honor the school’s winter sports, particularly the basketball, wrestling and swim teams.
“We had them when I came here 18 years ago, so part of it is tradition,” said Coach Clifford Ice, who is helping organize the event, “but it’s just to highlight and recognize kids who are involved outside the classroom.”
The assembly will include performances by the cheerleaders and band, as well as a few games for entertainment purposes. Overall, the staff working to organize this event believe that, most importantly, this event is for the students.
“It’s nice to see the kids get recognized, I think,” said Coach Jerry Collins, who is also helping organize the assembly. “I know the players and the teams, in particular, the seniors enjoy it because they get their name mentioned in front of the school.”
