Journalism organizations release ratings, awards
JournalismSTL and MJEA have released their 2019 ratings and awards.
The Echo earned JournalismSTL’s superior ratings for its Online Overall, its Print Version and its Voices of Webster podcast.
Three WGHS students earned MJEA honors. Senior Cole Schnell won News Photo of the Year for “Man challenges protestors” and freshman Zeke La Mantia won Portrait Photo of the Year for “Musical make-up artist tests designs.” Also senior Ellie Marshall was named a finalist for Cover Design of the Year for her cover “Soccer persists despite season losses.”
Individuals to earn JournalismSTL’s superior ratings were senior Trinity Madison for her Broadcast Feature “Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)”, sophomore Jaden Fields and freshman Gant Gibson for their Broadcast Feature “Halloween brings questions about safety,” senior Gretchen Skoglund for her Broadcast Feature “Seniors share high school insights,” and senior Greg Frazier for his Sports Photo “Men’s Basketball wins back-to-back State championships–Cover.”
Students earning JournalismSTL’s excellent ratings were Schnell for his Commentary Copy “Unsolicited sexual photos are sexual harassment,” senior Josie Krueger for her Commentary Copy “America needs better gun control” and “Recent climate report predicts environmental crisis,” Schnell and graduate Ashli Wagner for their News Copy “Students, staff, moms take action after MSD shooting,” LaMantia for his Portrait Photo “Musical make-up artist tests designs,” Skoglund for her Broadcast Feature “Historic Shaw Art Fair exhibits craftsmanship, culture,” sophomore Ada Foley for her Broadcast Feature “Students express beliefs about ghosts,” junior Emily Stisser for here Sports Feature Copy “Softball head coach emphasizes community,” junior Ethan Weihl for his Sports Photo “Sophomore Lauren Kelley begins her stretch of the Women’s 4×200 meters,” and Marshall for her Sports Photo “Senior captain Mason Schultz kicks ball.”
Students earning JournalismSTL’s honorable mention were sophomore Maeve Taylor and junior Lindsey Bennett for their News Feature Copy “Innovative teaching styles create new opportunities…,” Schnell for his News Photo “Man challenges protesters,” senior Ethan Ryan for his Broadcast News “DECA sponsors Night in the Courtyard,” Madison for here Broadcast Feature “Water polo in WG,” Taylor for her Broadcast Feature “Thrifting students find bargains, help community,” and Fields for her Sports Photo “Senior Dallas King and Gateway player Jemard Sykes grapple for ball.”

Volleyball hosts Childhood Cancer Awareness Game
Men’s Varsity volleyball team hosted Kirkwood, May 1, at 5:30 p.m. in Roberts Gymnasium.
The game was in support of Childhood Cancer Awareness, and the theme was “Dig For Gold.” Webster players and coaches sported gold T-shirts dedicated to the cause, and fans were also encouraged to wear gold/yellow to show support.
In preparation for the game, the team asked for donations of new toys to give to the Friends of Kids with Cancer charity. There was also be a Miracle Minute in between sets, in which cash donations were collected.
