Students honored at All Sports Awards Ceremony
Student athletes received awards on May 10 at the Sports Awards Ceremony. Fifty students were nominated.
MSHSAA Awards of Excellence were awarded to seniors RJ Wright and Jamie Tabron.
Coach of the Year was Thom Champion.
Team Manager of the Year was junior Tobey Nelson.
The Statesmen Spirit Award was awarded to senior Cullen Saltsman-Buck.
The Sportsmanship Award was awarded to senior Nicolette Schnettgoecke.
Comeback Athlete of the Year was junior Charlie Getz.
Freshman Athlete of the Year was Madeleine Collier.
Memorable Moment of the Year was the Men’s Basketball/Women’s Soccer State Championships. Performance of the Year was the 2017 Women’s Track at State Meet.
Male Athlete of the Year was senior Courtney Ramey, and Female Athlete of the Year was senior KK Rodriguez.
Choir students compete MSHSAA State Solo and Ensemble contest
Ten choir students competed March 27, at the MSHSAA State Solo and Ensemble Contest and earned five gold ratings and one silver.
Earning gold ratings were junior Rachel Fisher, junior Olivia Bickford, junior Nicolaus Braun and senior Mitchell Lazarow for soprano, alto, tenor and bass ensemble; Fisher, senior Keillyn Johnson, sophomore Bekah Kinworthy and Bickford for soprano, soprano, alto and alto ensemble; and freshman Reagan Austin and junior Aidan Jurotich for solos.
A silver rating was earned by Jurotich, junior Ray McIntyre, junior Sam Toskin and Lazarow for tenor, tenor, bass and bass ensemble.
Junior accepted to environmental program
Junior Elly Musial was accepted to the Environmental Studies Summer Youth Institute at Hobart and William Smith College in Geneva, NY.
The program is a two-week, college-level interdisciplinary summer program for talented high-school students entering junior and senior years. Only 50 students are chosen a year.
Musicians earn honors at State
Orchestra and band students competed in the State Solo and Ensemble Festival March 27, in Columbian.
Orchestra students earning a gold rating were seniors Brady Chrisler, Terry Johnson and Jeremy Ling, violin trio; seniors Alex Bird, Anna Bussler, Ling and Chrisler, violin quartet; Ling, violin solo; and junior Hope Johnson, cello solo.
Bussler also earned silver for violin solo
According to orchestra teacher Leah Poe, Ling is the first WGHS orchestra student to perform the maximum number of events (3) at State and receive all gold ratings.
Solo band members who earned gold at the State Solo and Ensemble Festival were junior Taylor Howard, clarinet; junior Nita Isom, clarinet; senior Myah Frank, flute; junior Jessica Powell, trombone; senior Jack Snelling, bassoon; sophomore Ray Wetzel-Meehan, trumpet; sophomore Evan Palmer, trombone; and sophomore Sam Swaine, alto sax.
Ensembles which earned gold ratings were Frank, Isom and Jack Snelling, woodwind trio; Frank, sophomore Maggie Stevison, Isom, junior Barrett Light and Snelling, woodwind quintet; senior Nicole Preston, sophomore Kathryn Heddens-Kocher and junior Taylor Howard, woodwind trio; Wetzel-Meehan, sophomore Matt Muldoon, senior Samantha Weber, sophomore Max McArthur and sophomore Ben Wieselmann, brass quintet.
Earning a silver rating was Swaine, freshman Sarah Kaul, freshman Henry Tomiser and freshman Larissa Striber, sax quartet.
Drama to present ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’
Auditions for the fall play “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” will be May 14-16, in the drama room.
After junior Sam Toskin wrote the grant proposal, the drama department was one of two high schools awarded a grant which gives the rights and waives royalties for the production of the play.
