People dream of being celebrities. With the new age of technology, people can become celebrities from the comfort of their own homes. According to alexa.com, YouTube is the third most popular site online. YouTube is a website owned by Google, where anyone can make a video and post it for anyone to see.
Some stars and famous people have come through YouTube like musician Justin Bieber or comedian Bo Burnham. Webster has some popular “YouTubers” itself.
YouTube has pages called channels, which are basically a profile page for one’s videos. To become a popular channel, it must get subscribers, which are other channels who are interested and get alerts of their subscription’s videos.
When a channel gets more subscribers, there is a much greater chance that its videos get more views. Eventually once a channel gets popular enough, it can get the option of having ads on the video and getting paid for the number of views it gets. WGHS has some people who have YouTube channels which get paid through Paypal for every view the video gets. The rate of revenue is different for each YouTube channel.
Here are some of Webster’s popular YouTube producers.
Doc Physics teaches online science with energy
Webster’s very own physics teacher and alumni David Schuster has a popular YouTube channel.
His YouTube channel, named Doc Schuster, has over 10,000 subscribers. He has uploaded over 300 videos which have accumulated over 750,000 views.
Most of his videos are filmed inside his classroom with just a piece of paper and different colored markers. His videos explain many different physics concepts and problems. “I just shut the door of my room and let the magic flow,” Schuster said.
His most popular video, “Parallel and Series Resistor Circuit Analysis Worked Example using Ohm’s Law Reduction,” has over 85,000 views. Schuster said he thinks it’s so popular because many engineers and physicists need to learn this problem.
Some of his video’s views come straight from Webster students. Schuster has his physics students watch some videos for homework to help teach concepts away from class.
“His videos are very informative and helpful for class and show us his enthusiasm for teaching,” physics student junior Bobby Drexl said.
“I think why my channel is so popular is because it’s more fun than other teachers on YouTube. A lot of the YouTube teachers are pretty dry and boring. My goal for my videos is to make it seem like I’m sitting next to you talking,” Schuster said.
For aspiring video and filmmakers, Schuster said, “Today’s audience requires energy and humor. If you can make videos with that in mind, you will be successful.”
Junior uses pokemon1086 to review video games
Junior Edward Flynn loves creating videos for YouTube.
Flynn’s YouTube channel, pokemon1086 has over 1,000 videos, and he has around 300 subscribers. He has also partnered with TGN, which is a YouTube gaming network and now gets paid for his videos.
Flynn said he tries to release new videos every Friday and Saturday. He has accumulated over 100,000 views on all his videos.
“I use my HD camcorder, put it on a tripod and sit in front of the TV and record commentary on games. I make jokes and voices, and it’s a lot of fun. I also do Vlogs. Vlogs are video blogs of everyday stories that happen in your life,” Flynn said.
His most popular video is him recording himself playing Pokemon HeartGold, when his game glitches and he gets a free leaf stone. Leaf stones have the ability to evolve Grass-type Pokemon. The video has around 20,000 views.
“I know I’m not as big as other people on YouTube, but that doesn’t matter. My suggestion when you make videos is don’t let people talk you down. If you’re confident at all, just do it. You don’t have to be as popular as others to go on Youtube and make videos; all you have to do is make them,” Flynn said.
One of his more popular Vlogs is titled, “Things I Can’t Stand!” where Flynn discusses his grievances with society and everyday life.
“Edward Flynn’s videos are the best thing to happen to YouTube since the Evolution of Dance. They are so awesome,” junior Will Burchett said.
“I guess my favorite part of my videos is that they show a different side of me. In my videos, I’m not just a geek hiding out in the shadows of school,” Flynn said.
As a warning, some of pokemon1086’s videos may contain language that is not suitable for children.
