For five years Webster Groves High School has had a dance team or some form of a dance team, but for the school year 2013-2014, it won’t.

The dance team was once a class, and then it was combined with the color guard.

Then separated from the color guard and made as an activity. There is no color guard, and now there’s no dance team.

The same group that did color guard used to be the same group of students that did dance team, according to activities director Jerry Collins.

They even had the same sponsor. Then the dance team and color guard chose sides, some choosing dance team and others color guard. About the same time the sponsor changed, which contributed to both groups struggling.

“Once they split the just didn’t have the numbers,” Collins said. Soon there was no coach and team.    At the end of last school year, students met to see who would be interested in being on the dance team.

“Less than 10 showed up. The rest were seniors who weren’t going to be here,” Collins said.

Another reason for no dance team is also because the last two sponsors lacked experience in dance. Collins said they were looking for a coach with a strong background with dance.

No need to fear dance team lovers because there is hope for a dance team for the 2014-2015 school year if more dancers show interest and the school finds a coach.

Therefore, all dancers or anyone who is interested in a dance team reboot should let the activities office know.

Collins said the potential for a dance team next year depends on number. “It’s nothing against the girls on it. It’s just like a class with five students, would it make sense?”
