Run by Kevin Cole the jazz band had a concert called “Mardi Groves” on Feb. 26, for the high school students during advisory and during the night for friends and family.
Having performed before with Steve Ewing this school year, the band is experienced when working with different artists, so for this concert, the band worked with Grammy Award-winning drummer
Stanton Moore, an American rock drummer from New Orleans.
“He is in the scene of New Orleans, music and the history of it, as anybody I can think of, and we’re super excited to have him,” Cole said.
Along with bringing in musicians outside the high school, the band also incorporates choir students like Chloe Bronner, a regular member of its performances.
While rehearsing for the concert Moore wanted students to “take three deep breaths” before playing to calm their nerves and better their playing.
The band had two days to practice with Moore arriving on Feb. 24, before the concert, and Cole has done most of the music preparation to smoothly incorporate Moore into the music.
“I wrote a bunch of his tunes to fit our band, and he’s gonna come and just drop what he does right on top of what we do. We’ll hopefully enhance each other and have a good time with it,” Cole said
The band planned to do 14 songs with Moore, which it has been preparing for on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7-9 p.m. during their weekly practices.
These practices will begin again on the same schedule after the concert to start preparing for an upcoming concert, which will be on April 22, in the night auditorium at the high school.
