Douglass Night is an annual basketball game that is meant to honor Douglass High School, an all African-American school that closed in 1956. Every year, the team wears special Douglass jerseys to celebrate the tradition.

On this year’s Douglass Night, the Statesmen took a 50-point win against McCluer, making it McCluer’s fifth loss in a row this season.

Webster, who was now 9-and-3, had its third win in a row with a 20 or more point lead at home. The previous two wins were against SLUH, on Jan. 5, and against Kirkwood, on Jan. 9, both at Roberts Gym.

“I had full confidence in my team, and I believed we could beat anybody. I wasn’t surprised that we blew them out. We knew going into that game that they weren’t gonna be the best, but we played it like any other game, and we delivered,” freshman guard Henry Binkholder said.

Offensively, most starters scored over 10 or more points, and players coming off of the bench contributed by scoring 29 points in total.

Defensively, Webster had 14 steals in total, with the most coming from junior guard Jayden Woods, with five, and another three coming from senior guard Quincy Williams.

“I believed in our team and knew what we were capable of. We played our game, and we got our outcome we wanted,” junior guard Jayden Woods said.

Webster’s winning streak against McCluer dates back to 2021, when Webster defeated it 81-47. This is its fifth win in a row against McCluer.

Webster, who previously lost to Inglewood 77-76 in a Highland tournament before facing McCluer at home, with a five-win streak for home games. This was its first and last matchup this season, before playing nine away games in a row.
