Twenty-four journalism, publications and yearbook students attended Missouri Interscholastic Journalism Association‘s J-Day at Mizzou, March 27, where they attended breakout sessions and were awarded overall ratings and individual awards.
The keynote speaker was Hannah Wise, Kansas City Star‘s assistant managing editor for Engagement and Experimentation, who focused on the Star’s multi-platformed coverage of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.
Cathy Kuhlmeier also presented sessions about the Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier Supreme Court case.
Other breakout sessions included social media, law, yearbook, photography, leadership, broadcasting, storytelling, leadership and drone journalism.
Webster Groves’ overall ratings included an All Missouri (the highest) for podcast/radio, Superiors for yearbook, video and online, and an Excellent rating for print.
Individual All Missouri winners were senior Sam Klein for the Podcast Newscast/News Feature ”Webster Groves to host Friendship Dance,” senior Hadley Hoskins for the Review ”’Guts’ perfectly describes teenage-girlhood,” senior Soledad Lee for Social Media Reporting, the yearbook staff for Traditional Package Sports “Men’s Cross Country” and for Traditional Package Student Life “Future Leaders.”
Superior ratings were earned by Klein for the Podcast–Newscast/News Feature “Voices of Webster: Students, staff share ‘Roman empires,'” junior Raegan McCoy for the Action Sports Photo “‘Score Big,'” sophomore Ryan DeMargel and Ameilia Brangle for the Podcast–Sportscast/Sports Feature “Women’s Varsity tennis competes at State,” Lee for the Student Life/Organization Photo “Senior wins limbo contest for Statesmen Stars”–Soledad Lee, and the yearbook staff for the Yearbook–Traditional Package–Student Life “Camp Wyman/Selma Street Dance” and the Yearbook Design “In the Groove of Living Student Life.”
Students earning Excellent ratings were sophomore Jasper Winterton for the News Feature “FACS funding limits class opportunities,” Lee for the News Feature “Senior sparks conversation through interviews,” Klein for the Student Life/Organization Photo “Little Shop of Horrors” and News Feature “AI finds place in school environment,” sophomore Arianna Peper for Sports Reporting “Men’s swim, dive team places sixth in State,” and the Sports Action Photos “Men’s swim, dive team places 6th in state” and”Junior swims relay,” and the yearbook staff for the Traditional package–Sports “Men’s Soccer.”
Honorable mentions were awarded to senior Margaret Oliphant for the News Feature ”Students celebrate Halloween with elaborate costumes” and senior Keianne Ross for the Student Life/Organization Photo ”Flying High.”
