Women’s Varsity basketball defeated St. Francis Borgia 59-51 on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Senior guard KK Rodriguez paced the squad with a team high of 30 points at home in Robert’s Gym.

Rodriguez has scored an impressive 30 points for the past two games. She was recently named KFNS High School Athlete of the Week. Throughout the game, she proved the title to be true.

Rodriguez started the game strong, nailing a layup 30 seconds in. She then spent some time on the bench, after a slight injury, but bounced back quickly after making a quick layup upon her return.  Rodriguez finished the game with five three pointers.

The Statesmen jumped out to a 13-12 lead after the first quarter. At half, the team still held strong and led 23-20.

Junior Lauren Hollandsworth chipped in eight points for Webster. Hollandsworth, recently back from a severe ankle injury, looked solid in her return. As she gets back into the team dynamic, she can hopefully repeat some of her past successes. The game was her second back, first at home.

“It is great to have Lauren back. We do not have many post players, so it helps to have a body inside the paint,” sophomore Elizabeth Zareh said.

New this year to the team, Freshman Gabriela Moore has been a crucial player throughout the season thus far along with Freshman Ja’mise Bailey. Moore scored eight points in the game and Bailey scored seven.

Senior Cassidy Moss was the high scorer for Borgia with 18 points while going 11-13 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Julia Struckhoff, the second highest scorer for Borgia, contributed eight points.

The loss dropped the Knights to an overall record of 6-7. The team attempted to rally in the fourth quarter, with 18 points, but could not make it happen.

Webster improved its record to 7-8 on the season.
