As the Stateswomen basketball team prepares for a Feb. 10, bout with rivals Rockwood Summit, it is trying to overcome some recurring obstacles.
The 11-8 Stateswomen need work in areas such as “leadership, team chemistry, and the need for unselfish teammates,” Coach Patti Perkins said.
“I wouldn’t redo or change anything from this season because what we’re going through could hopefully make us stronger,” Perkins said. “It’s a work in progress.”
Webster is coming out of its own winter tournament limping after going 1-2 against some of the premier teams in Missouri. A second round consolation victory over Cor Jesu was sandwiched by losses to Rock Bridge and St. Joseph’s.
Still, there have been bright spots on the team through its tough schedule.
“The team leader this season would have to be (senior) Maggie Moran…She has lots of positivity and is a positive team mate. She’s also very comfortable with the responsibility of being team leader,” Coach Perkins said.
According to Perkins, the team was at its best in games against Jackson and Borgia, but struggled most against Hazelwood Central and Lafayette.
Team goals would have to be “winning conference, winning districts, and overall making a State run,” Perkins said of the team, which made a run to the State quarterfinals last year in one of the best seasons in program history.
“Basketball sort of changed my life’s point of view. Some of the time it mostly depends on the day,” Perkins said. “Basketball is a good way to teach responsibility and it’s just a great way to prepare the students skills in life. It is also not just a game. It’s a way of life.”
