Five ECHO staff members and journalism students along with over 1,300 students attended Missouri Interscholastic Press Association’s J-Day at Mizzou April 6.
Advisor Donald Johnson was presented the Taft Award, which is given to a person or group for outstanding service to scholastic journalism.
ECHO earned a Superior rating for its print version and an All Missouri rating for its online version.
Six ECHO members earned five All Missouri ratings for their works. These were Caroline Fellows for News Photography for her photos of the Botanical Gardens’ Japanese Festival, Ashli Wagner for News Photo for her photos of the Botanical Gardens’ Chinese Lanterns, Abby Botan for Online Column for her review of haunted houses, Caleb Bolin and Bennett Durando for their story about the political clubs on campus, and Jack Killeen for his editorial about the high school’s garden.
Three ECHO members earned Superior ratings for their works. These were Jake Collins for Student Life/Organizations for his school coffee shop photo, Jack Killeen for his Online Editorial about adding a college guidance class, and Abby Botan for Diversity Awareness for her article “Men should be Feminists.”
Two ECHO members earned four Excellent ratings. These were Jake Collins for Sports Action Photo for “Soccer Pileup,” Andy Kimball for Sports Action Photo for “Contested Layup,” for Sports Writing for his article “Ramey overcomes” and for his Online Column “Lack of supervision cheats students.”
Eight ECHO members earned 10 Honorable mention ratings. These were Will Conerly for Diversity Awareness for “New Theme Changes Assembly,” Irene Ryan for Diversity Awareness for “Older Generations’ Judgements,” Jack Killeen for his News Story “Junior temporarily banned from sporting events,” Bennett Durando for his News Story “Driver charged with manslaughter” and for Column Writing for “Givens’ goal gives Webster second straight State title,” Andy Kimball for his Online Column “Voting age should be lowered” and for his Sports Action Photo “Back2Back,” Cole Schnell for his Online Sports Package “100 wins for Clark: Principal to guest coach basketball game,” Ashli Wagner for a Feature Story about Dr. Clark’s surgery and a Diversity Awareness entry about the Feminist Coalition’s work with the dress code and Julia Karsteter for her Student Life/Organization Photo “This is a bank robbery.”
