Webster Groves School District Foundation made several changes to celebrate the 10th Annual Ivory Crockett Run 4 Webster this Oct. 19.
Every year, more than 250 people participate in its one-mile fun run/walk, four-mile run and 100-yard dash for children only.
“The 10th Annual Ivory Crockett Run 4 Webster has changed quite a bit for this 10th year. It starts and ends in front of WGHS with the 100 yard dash taking place down Selma,” Webster Groves School District Foundation grants chairperson Jerry Pinkner said.
According to the Ivory Crockett website, there will be a 100-yard timed finish for the four-mile and one-mile races this year. After the races conclude, a party will begin with music, drinks, food and an award ceremony with Crockett himself congratulating the winners.
“Proceeds from this event are used to fund scholarships for graduating seniors at Webster Groves Senior High who are entering college to pursue a degree in the medical field as well as to fund grants awarded to faculty and staff of the Webster Groves School District,” the website’s press release said.
The Webster Groves School District Foundation sponsors the Ivory Crockett Run, and every year high school students help out with the event.
“We really need students to run, or to volunteer for service hours,” Jerry Pinkner said.
The race was established by Crockett himself, who graduated from Webster Groves High School in 1968 as a locally-known track star. Crockett was known as “the world’s fastest man” up
on becoming the U.S. Champion in the 100-yard dash in 1974.
Webster Groves recognized his accomplishments by naming a park in his honor: Ivory Crockett Park. To give back to his local community, Crockett created the Ivory Crockett Run 4 Webster with the help of the Sports Medicine Training Center.
